A farewell to Athens, for now.

I'm leaving Athens today and even though I look forward to come home to Stockholm I got to admit that I will miss this place. Since I got here I have felt such a welcoming spirit and I've meet so many amazing people. Everyone has taken care of me in the best possible way and given me such a great time here. Now I will go back to Stockholm and process everything I've experience and hopefully turn it in to something really great. The result of my work will be able take part of during Beckmans College of Design's annual degree show in May as well on this website. Hopefully I get chance to come back to Athens soon, maybe during football season, but until then, thank you very much!

Please keep checking in here for updates on my process and more information on the degree show.

The food of Athens

Off-campus dining here in Athens is very good, there are several restaurants to choose from. Here are some of the meals I have enjoyed. My favorite places would probably be Dawg Gone Good BBQ and Five Star Day Café, so if you are ever in Athens, check them out!

How bout' them Dawgs

The Georgia Bulldog are the athletic teams of the University of Georgia. Down here in the South, College Football is by far the most popular sport and Georgia Football team play their home games on Sanford Stadium. This on-campus playing venue has the capacity for 97,746 people. That makes it larger than most of Europe's major "soccer" venues. It's hard to explain how big this is, watch this video below about the Southeastern Conference, that the Bulldogs are members of, to get an idea of what it is all about.

Let the Big Dawg Eat

UGA has four dining halls called Bolton, Ogelthorpe, Snelling and The Village Summit. This monday I visited Snelling together with Emma Bergman, a Swedish student here at UGA. Snelling offer a 24-hour service so if you would like to grab some ice cream in the middle of the night, you can do that. Inside you find plenty of options to choose from like pasta, pizza, omelets, salad, sandwiches, burritos and so on. Pretty much what ever you want. I got so overwhelmed by all the options I just got a burrito. As a visitor I payed $10 to get in. That's a little more than you usually pay for a lunch downtown, but here you get to eat as much food as you possibly can, drinks and desserts included. Everything about this place felt very luxurious with the 24-hour service and all the options to choose from. Some say you get tired of if after a while, but compared to every other dining hall I have ever visited, this is by far the best one.

The AdClub

Tonight was a great night because I got to meet the UGA AdClub and attend one of their meeting. If I was a UGA student this would be the first thing I would join. The club has about 200 members and they arrange weekly meetings designed to guide the transition from the University to careers in the advertising agency. But besides that they throw Mad Men themed parties, give you points for wearing the AdClub t-shirt and arrange agency tours to Atlanta. And the coolest part about it is that it is completely run by students who got a passion for advertising. Tonight they had an alumni currently enrolled at the 72U (a one year program created by the LA based agency 72andSunny) speak to the club about her experience. It was really interesting and I got to meet a lot of great people.

The Dorms

I got a short tour of one of UGA's 21 student residence halls called Reed Hall. All first years students are required to live in campus residence halls and you share a room with a randomly selected roommate. The room I visited at Reed Hall were actually really nice and more spacious then I had expected. Reed Hall is apparently very popular due to its central location on campus, just next to the Sanford Stadium. Unfortunately you can't see into the arena but during gamedays Reed Hall residents apparently gets their fair share of the hundred thousand screaming fans.

A Swedish day in Athens

Today I'm meeting up with two of UGA's Swedish students. It will be fun to get some Swedish perpective on this place. More to come.

An other beautiful day in Athens, Georgia.

My Georgia Theatre experience

My first night here I visited the legendary Georgia Theatre. Many prominent acts from Athens like R.E.M and The B-52s has preformed at the Theatre. I was there to see Zeds Dead, a Canadian dubstep duo from Toronto. I have been to concerts like this before but I have to say that I've never witness such dedication from a crowd through out the entire show like I did here. People were constantly dancing, cheering and trowing beer. It all ended with one of the band members proclaiming that "I never did the college thing, but if I did, it would definitely be here in Athens." I guess I've come to the right place after all.
